MONSANTO

More than 2 millennia of history and heritage serving as the backdrop for Game of Thrones.

Monsanto is a unique tourist destination in central Portugal, famous for its dramatic setting among giant granite boulders.

Known as “the most Portuguese village in Portugal,” it has origins dating back to pre-Roman times and later gained importance during the medieval period under the Knights Templar. The village’s stone houses are built between and beneath massive rocks, creating a striking and authentic landscape.

At the top stands the Monsanto Castle, offering panoramic views of the surrounding plains. Rich in traditions, folklore, and rural culture, Monsanto provides visitors with a journey through history, blending natural beauty with architectural ingenuity and a strong sense of identity.

Recently, Monsanto was used as a filming location for HBO’s House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel, thanks to its dramatic medieval village, granite boulders, and castle ruins that evoke a fantasy world. Scenes set in “Dragonstone” were shot around the castle and historic streets, bringing the village’s timeless charm to the screen and giving fans a real‑world Westeros backdrop to explore.
